CBPA Presentation Skills: Make a Chart's Scale as Clear as Its Headline

A chart can contain correct numbers and still create a misleading impression. Students should check the axis, unit and comparison behind a visual claim, not only whether the bars look polished.

Write the change before designing the chart

Suppose a fictional activity's count rises from 20 to 25. The absolute increase is five, while the relative increase is 5/20 = 25%.

Calling the result an increase of five percent confuses a count with a percentage. Label the measure and time periods explicitly.

Choose and disclose an appropriate scale

A bar chart whose vertical scale begins at 19 can make the second bar look dramatically taller. Bar length is normally read as magnitude, so the baseline and any break require particular care.

This does not mean every chart must begin at zero. A line chart studying small changes may use a limited range, provided the range is clear and the interpretation fits.

Keep the comparison honest

Check whether 20 and 25 represent the same period length, population and counting method. Five more records might reflect changed collection rather than the claimed improvement.

Do not remove inconvenient categories or hide missing data merely to strengthen the visual story.

Connect the graphic to evidence

Give the source or label the figures as illustrative. State the supported observation first, then explain any limitations on the conclusion.

This original example concerns general business communication, not official CBPA judging rules or a completed submission. Students should build and explain their own charts under current organiser and school requirements.
